How do I protect myself from COVID-19?

Covid-19 FAQ's

The following measures can help you protect yourself from contracting and/or spreading COVID-19:

  • Keep a safe distance of 2 metres (6 feet) from other people who are not in your household. Avoid crowded places or gatherings.
  • Where you absolutely cannot maintain 2 meters (6 feet) of distance from others, take measures to prevent exposure to the virus such as wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (i.e. mask, eye protection, gloves). Also consider the role of other factors known to prevent the transmission, such as being outdoors, having good ventilation and/or limiting the duration of exposure.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water (for at least 20 seconds) throughout the day. If washing your hands is not an option, use an alcohol-based hand rub (that contains at least 60% alcohol and is approved for use against COVID-19 by Health Canada) to thoroughly clean your hands. If your hands are visibly soiled, make sure to wipe them first before sanitizing.
  • Avoid touching your face, eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands in order to reduce the chance of exposing the virus to a mucous membranes in your body.
  • Cover coughs or sneezes with a tissue or elbow, to minimize the spread of respiratory droplets. Throw the tissue in the trash immediately, and wash your hands thoroughly.
  • Clean and disinfect all frequently touched hard surfaces (i.e. door handles, elevator buttons, keys, light switches, remote controls, equipment, touch screen devices, keyboard/mouse).
  • Consider changing uniform at the work place. Avoid shaking clothing as this can spread virus particles into the air; store clothing to be washed in a bag until it can be laundered. Perform proper hand hygiene after handling the uniform. Suspected or contaminated clothing can be washed with other laundry in hot water and regular detergent in order to kill the virus.
  • Where possible, avoid sharing items with other people so as to prevent the spread of the virus through food, drinks, utensils etc.
  • If you are feeling sick, stay at home and avoid close contact with anyone else. Do the Fit for Work Assessment for further direction on whether you need to be tested for COVID-19.
